"The Crash Reel" Film Recap:
On December 31, 2009 Kevin Pearce was training for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Slope Style Snowboarding. Kevin was at the top of his game beating out Shawn White aka "the flying tomato" in recent competitions, which at the time was unheard of. Unfortunately, while trying to pull off an incredibly difficult trick, the Cab 1080 Double Cork, Kevin fell and suffered a traumatic brain injury. At times, doctors were unsure if Kevin would make it or if he would ever function as a normal human being again. Kevin proved to be incredibly lucky, regaining near normal functionality. Today, Kevin Pearce serves as an inspirational speaker and leads "Love Your Brain" foundation that raises awareness about TBI (Traumatic Brain Injuries) and the importance of wearing helmets. Kevin was recently named "Adventurer of the Year" by National Geographic (2014).
My thoughts: I was completely amazed by "The Crash Reel." Although some people might find this movie a tad bit depressing, I found it incredibly inspirational. Kevin showed great determination in order to get back to his true love of snowboarding. Kevin had to adapt to the new challenges associated with his TBI. He had to learn to accept his new brain and carve out a new life for himself.
I encourage all of you to check out the Love Your Brain website. They sell super hip T's and sporty reusable bags (see photo below) with proceeds going to TBI awareness and prevention efforts. Also, see the video embedded below. This is one of Kevin's latest interviews and it's amazing to see the progress he has made over the last couple of years.
